Choral – Terry Logan
Terry holds Associate degrees from the Royal Conservatory of Music in voice and piano. She completed her advance studies in voice with Phyllis Mailing at the Vancouver Academy of Music and piano with Edward Parker.
The Logan Studio has produced many fine singers and pianists who have earned top awards at the local and Provincial levels. Numerous students have been awarded Gold Medals for achieving the highest marks in BC on their practical exams.
Terry has founded and conducted several community and church choirs. The Logan Studio choir, The Chantant Youth Ensemble, have received many local and Provincial awards. Her current women’s choir, The Ancora Ensemble (ancoraensemble.ca), became Provincial award winners in their inaugural year of 2013. Terry is also the music director of the Celtic Cara show and the conductor of the Vernon Community Singers.
What’s New for 2019
For the 2019 Festival we have added:
- The ARCT for Strings has been added to the Strings Discipline for the 2019 Festival.
- The Band Discipline has been postponed for the 2019 Festival. Changes in School District #83 to the funding and staffing of the music program has necessitated a ‘leave of absence’ for the next Shuswap Music Festival. The Shuswap Music Festival Society is hopeful that Band will return as a viable discipline in future years.
Performing Arts BC 2018 Official Winners
Strings – Laurie Syer
Laurie teaches violin and viola students in the small community of Bergen, Alberta. A former member of the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra, she has performed as soloist in a wide variety of venues in western Canada and in Europe. Laurie is a founding member of Calgary’s Allegra String Quartet, and has performed as a chamber musician with such groups as the Lyric Chamber Players, New Works Calgary and many other ensembles, both in Alberta and British Columbia. She is founding Artistic co-Director of Strings & Keys: a summer music workshop which welcomed dozens of students to Bergen beginning in 1995. Laurie is involved with many community projects, and enjoys gardening, baking in her outdoor wood-fired oven, and hanging out with her Boder Collie, Skipper.
Vocal/Choirs – George Roberts
George Roberts is a graduate of the School of Music UBC and the Vancouver Academy of Music where he was privileged to study under Phyllis Mailing. A member of the Vancouver Chamber Choir, he is a frequent soloist in concert and on recordings. He has adjudicated music festivals from Victoria to Winnipeg, and has facilitated choral workshops throughout BC. His solo career has included engagements with the Pacific Baroque Orchestra, Early Music Vancouver, Festival Vancouver, Trinity Western University, the Vancouver Symphony, and many community organizations in the Lower Mainland. For 25 summers, George has been the vocal instructor at the West Coast Family Music Festival, offering group instruction in vocal technique, song interpretation and diction for singers. He is an instructor in the Music Department at Capilano University, North Vancouver and the Co-ordinator of Music at Highlands United Church, North Vancouver. The Highlands Youth Choir were musical guests of First United Church in May 2018. He occasionally presents solo recitals and is highly regarded for his ease of production and expressive singing. Originally from Enderby, Geordie makes his home in North Vancouver with his wife, Frances, and sons, Aidan and Garreth and Liam, no longer all sopranos.
